CREATING A DRESSING ROOM IN A SMALL SPACE (behind the scenes)
Today’s post is a little different, I am sharing the behind the scenes of a recent project where I was decluttering and organising a small spare room that has now been transformed into a dressing room. It was imperative to create an easy system that was easy to follow. The goal for a dressing room / walk in closet is for you to see everything ,to make dressing up easier and make everything accessible. I am sharing some tips below on how you can create your own dressing room.
1.Measure - I always recommend the first thing you do is to measure your space, double checking on ceiling heights too, if this is something you can’t do on your own you can enlist a professional to come and do this for you.
2. Edit - After we are clear on our measurements the next phase will be to start editing your clothing & accessories, in the words of Marie Kondo if it doesn’t “spark joy” you should get rid of it. Editing is a crucial part of creating a dressing room, I am a big fan of the Get organised Home Edit show on Netflix, it has really helpful tips on how to decide what to keep and what not to keep.
3. Storage systems - the best storage system that worked best for this space was the Pax wardrobe system from Ikea, which you can customise depending on what type of clothes you have, in this case my client needed storage for winter coats, long dresses, shoes, bags, so in planning her Pax system incorporating shelving, drawers and rails allowed us to personalise her wardrobe system to suit her needs.
4. Categorise - After personalising the storage system, the fun part was to fill it and put the edited clothing in the right place, as you can see everything was organised so it can be easily found, so all bags together, all the shoes together, space for long clothing, etc, now when she gets dressed she can see everything.
